Where is Malta located?
Malta is a small sovereign nation-state in Europe situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Malta, which comprises three inhabited islands, is the smallest EU member state regarding landmass (316 km2 / 122 sqm) and population ( 443,336 in January 2022).
Malta is located 93 kilometres (58 miles) south of Sicily (Italy) in Southern Europe and around 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of the North African coast, according to a map of Europe.
Malta is a small island republic of three islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Maltese and English are the official languages of the country.
Valletta, Malta’s capital city, is located in the centre of the island’s north shore and contains the island’s largest harbour.
Malta’s main island is the largest and most developed Maltese island. Gozo, Malta’s sister island, is lovely, serene, and primarily rural, with breathtaking views and plenty of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and rock climbing.
Comino is the smallest of the three islands, with only a few residents. The island is home to one of Malta’s most stunning bays, the Blue Lagoon, and a hotel known for its hospitality and facilities for spending restful holidays in Malta.
Malta is the largest of the three islands in terms of geographical size. Malta is roughly 246 square kilometres (95 square miles), with Gozo coming in second at only 67 square kilometres (26 square miles), and Comino is the smallest of the inhabited Maltese islands at only 2.7 square kilometres (1 sq miles). Malta is home to 84 per cent of the country’s population, with most urbanization taking place in the island’s north-eastern side, with Valletta and its harbour regions at the heart of the most densely populated areas.
With its enormous harbours, it’s no wonder that Malta has the highest population density compared to Gozo, while Comino has only four residents at the moment. Malta has the most significant percentage of built-up land of any EU member state, at over 30%.
The Maltese are proud people with a distinct culture moulded by various cultures over many centuries of occupation.
Many people mistakenly believe that Maltese culture is simply a melting pot of cultures brought in by foreign empires; nevertheless, foreign influences shaped a collection of pre-existing, age-old traditions, practices, and beliefs passed down through generations of Maltese and Gozitans.
The country has two official languages, with Maltese and English being spoken by most of the population.
