Pharmacies open today in Malta and Gozo.
Malta has over 200 pharmacies, with at least one in each hamlet and a few dozen in each town. Thus, you will have no problem locating one near your house.
How do pharmacies in Malta function?
Prescriptions
General Practitioners or specialists write prescriptions. Most pharmacies do not require identification. Unlike in many other countries, the prescription does not get scanned, and there is no customer file. Important information: Your doctor can even give you a prescription photo, which the pharmacy would accept! You only need to present it on your phone, and you will receive your medicine without issue.
Medication distribution
In Malta, pharmacists sell a wide range of medications. The text on most pharmaceutical boxes will be written in English, but you may also discover select brands in foreign languages such as Greek or Spanish. Be sure to find out what brand of medication you have been given. It is possible that some products are not available in your country. Even though you are a member of the European Union, not all legislation is enforced correctly!
You will need to provide a prescription to obtain the medications recommended for you, like in many other nations.
If you haven’t previously visited a doctor, you can go straight to the drugstore and ask the pharmacist for help. They can give you legitimate medicine that does not require a prescription.
Payment
In terms of payment, you must pay in advance and then seek reimbursement from your health insurance. Depending on the pharmacy, you can pay with cash or credit card and be issued a receipt.
Schedules for pharmacies
In most situations, pharmacies are open Monday through Saturday, beginning at 8 am, with reduced hours on Saturdays. Some Sundays are “on call,” according to a rotating plan. Remember that these businesses are often closed for a few hours during the day.
Pharmacists who are doctors
Many pharmacies have doctors ready for consultations without an appointment. A consultation will undoubtedly cost you money, but it is convenient if you need to visit a specialist regarding a non-urgent concern. It is occasionally essential to wait, but the wait is seldom very lengthy. Do not be afraid to phone the pharmacy ahead of time to ensure that a doctor is available.
The cost of a doctor in a drugstore
The cost of these consultations varies per doctor; however, it is usually between €8 and €20. The clinic will provide you with a payment receipt, which you may use to request reimbursement from your health insurance company later.
