Palais Le Brun

This palazzino is one of Valletta’s oldest private residences, with records dating back to 1606. These first structures were built around the city’s lone natural spring, and they had to adhere to architect Francesco Laparelli’s requirements that these dwellings directly access the spring’s water reserves.

This palazzino had been in the Le Brun family since the 17th century, and it had been passed down through the centuries to people like Claude Le Brun, Knight of St. John, and the brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Le Brun, both of whom were Masters of the Mint in the 17th century. Giovanni Le Brun is the only Master of the Mint who has served under three flags: The Order, the French, and the British.

The palace was leased to the Borg Olivier family in the late 19th/early 20th century, with the result that Malta’s first Prime Minister, Dr George Borg Olivier, grew up in this house. So enter one of Valletta’s most prestigious mansions, which has been transformed into a beautiful luxury hotel.
