Caffe Cordina

Caffe Cordina, on 244 Republic Street, Valletta, is Malta’s best-known and oldest café. Established in 1837 as a confectionery shop in Bormla and later relocated to its current position in 1944 by Cesare Cordina.

Situated in a historic palazzo that was once the Treasury of the Order of St. John, Caffe Cordina is tastefully furnished inside. Vaulted ceilings are depicted with frescoes by renowned Maltese artist Giuseppe Calì, depicting Malta’s various periods through history. The café also features paintings representing Malta’s Independence, the establishment of the Republic, and accession to the European Union.

Caffe Cordina is known for its genuine Maltese pastries, including pastizzi and qassatat. Caffe Cordina also offers a variety of homemade sweets and pastries prepared in-house, and a variety of gourmet items.

Besides its culinary options, Caffe Cordina is a supporter of the arts. It has collaborated with the Malta Society of Arts to provide venues for exhibitions, further cementing its role as a cultural hub in Valletta.

In respect for its historical and cultural significance, Caffe Cordina became part of the European Historic Cafés Association in 2021 as a member alongside other prominent European cafés. If you are seeking a taste of traditional Maltese food, an acquaintance with historic buildings, or a rich cultural encounter, Caffe Cordina offers a unique and unforgettable experience right in the midst of Valletta.
