Hooli.
Johnston Farrugia, better known by his stage name Hooli, is a Maltese rapper who has gained significant popularity in the local music scene. Hooli was born on 23 September 1980, and he has entertained audiences with his music for over two decades.
Hooli began his career in 2002 when he worked on the opening theme song for a Smash Television show. He launched his debut album, Oriġinali Bħali, in February 2003, and it became a smash in Malta. He played at other musical events in Malta and Gozo after this triumph.
His second album, Hooliġinali, was released in 2004; the second was released in 2006. Featured: Aldo Busuttil, Ira Losco, Julie Zahra, Joe Demicoli, Dime’n’D, She 2’s, Debbie Scerri, IQ and Legacy.
In 2004 Nieħdu Buzz single was launched. It consisted of 3 tracks, including Nieħdu Buzz, Nieħdu Buzz remix by Duo Blank, and a medley from Oriġinali Bħali.
Triloġinali, his third album, was released in July 2012. A few English tracks were on the album, and some songs mixed Hooli’s usual hip-hop with dance music. Throughout his career, Hooli has been recognised for his accomplishments in the music industry. Hooli won the Best Hip Hop and R&B Performer award at the Malta Music Awards in 2013. Triloġinali – the third album – featured Fabrizio Faniello, La Barokka, Adie and Janvil.
Hooli won the first two Hip Hop Freestyle contest editions, Botta u Risposta, in 2014 and 2016. Mument ta’ Skiet, Hooli’s new song and music video, was released in 2017. Hooli was welcomed in the 2019 edition of Rock Opera Gensna, during which the song Dak iz-Zmien became a local hit.
Early Life and Career
Hooli grew up in a small town in Malta, where he developed a passion for music at a young age. He became a fan of Snoop Dogg when he was 13 years old, and the hip-hop scene inspired him in the United States. He started writing and performing his music in Maltese, his mother tongue.
