Malta is the first EU country to legalise Cannabis for personal use.
The Island of Malta has become the first European Union Country to legalize Cannabis for personal use at home. On Tuesday (14.12.2021), MPs adopted a legislative reform to enable residents to produce and possess limited amounts of marijuana. Under the new law, citizens aged 18 and above will possess up to seven grams of Cannabis and produce up to four cannabis plants at their own homes.
Maltese residents will still face fines of up to €100 if caught with 7 to 28 grams of Cannabis in their hands. The use of the substance in public will remain illegal, and fines rise to €235, and between €300 and €500 if they use it in front of youngsters.
Non-profit organizations, on the other hand, will be permitted to grow cannabis plants for sale to no more than 500 members, as long they are not located close to schools or youth groups.
The Maltese Authority will supervise and execute the responsible use of Cannabis.
