Malta’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations
While Christmas is traditionally a more private affair on the islands, New Year’s Eve celebrations are more open to the public and include clubbing, street parties, and fireworks!
Many locals celebrate New Year’s Eve in Valletta or Floriana, which organizes big street parties with free access. In Valletta, the festivity usually ends with a massive pyrotechnic display at the stroke of midnight. St George’s Square, the Valletta Waterfront, and St. Anne’s Street in Floriana are popular gathering spots for locals and visitors to enjoy the countdown.
St. Julian’s and Paceville are other popular destinations, particularly among the younger population, who prefer to party their way through Paceville, the island’s busiest clubbing and bar district. However, remember that most New Year’s Eve events and party tickets are sold out well in advance, so research before making any plans.
A huge family lunch is served on New Year’s Day, followed by coffee and traditional holiday desserts. Locals frequently choose to dine out on special occasions, with most places offering pre-booked set menus. Streets are relatively quiet in the morning if you plan to visit Malta on New Year’s Day since most people choose to sleep in or nurse a hangover before lunch. If the weather is nice, many families like to walk in Buskett, Dingli, Mellieha, or the quiet city of Mdina before returning home for the evening. On the first day, young people frequently return to Paceville late afternoon to appreciate the clubs and bars.
